The Wachau Valley
Around 80 kilometres from Vienna is the beautiful Wachau Valley, an area famed for its spectacular scenery and rich history and culture. The valley lies between the towns of Melk and Krems, and the best access is the A22 motorway to Stockerau, followed by the interchange to S5 until you reach the Krems exit. Known as the Romantic Road of Austria, the route follows the Danube past historic monasteries and castles through vineyard-clad hills. Melk is famous for its Abbey, one of the finest Baroque churches in Europe.

Vienna to Salzburg
The drive from Vienna to Salzburg is 312 kilometres and takes just under four hours on the A1 Autobahn. However, you can develop this trip into a three-day scenic tour and take the E59 from Vienna to Hallstatt with stops at Lichtenstein, Melk and Steyr. Hallstatt is a picturesque village in the Austrian Alps with stunning views. It's then just 77 kilometres to Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart and a city packed with history and culture.

Vienna to Tyrol
Tyrol is a spectacular Alpine location offering something throughout all the seasons, depending on when you visit and what you want to do. This is The Sound of Music and more! Wintertime provides a Christmas card scene and winter sports, and in summer, visitors can hike through the hills and mountains. Seegrotte Hinterbrühl
Seegrotte Hinterbrühl is a former gypsum mine and now Europe's largest underground lake. Located in Lower Austria, just 15 kilometres south of Vienna, the lake was accidentally created when the mine flooded after an explosion in 1912. Part of the mine was used in the film The Three Musketeers, and it has a fascinating history throughout the Second World War. Visitors can take a boat trip on the lake.

Vienna Woods
Within easy reach of the city and just half an hour's drive, the Wienerwald is a 28-mile section of forested hills with spectacular walks. Hike up to the Jubiläumswarte lookout tower for sweeping views of the city below. There are designated walking trails through the forest, which vary in length and difficulty.

Bratislava, Slovakia
Just an hour from Vienna is the capital of Slovakia, which has an authentic blend of architectural styles and a magnificent Renaissance castle. Bratislava and Vienna are two of the most closely located European capital cities. Add in a visit to Devin Castle, one of Slovakia's oldest castles and of significant archaeological importance.
