- CamperDays stands for transparency! That's why we give every customer the opportunity to share their experiences with other customers after their campervan trip.
Rome is on most people's bucket lists worldwide, so why not combine your visit by hiring a campervan to explore more of the area? There is loads to see here, such as the Colosseum, the Vatican, and the Pantheon, which makes it the best place to hire a campervan.
We wouldn’t suggest driving the city when you hire a campervan in Rome (it's a very busy city); instead, it's good to get out of the city and explore the surrounding area at your own pace, with the flexibility to create your itinerary.
When you use CamperDays, we are sure you will find the best deals for motorhome rental in Rome. Our price comparison tool connects you with local companies to ensure you get the best rates. There are also plenty of filters to find the perfect van for your needs.

Helpful tips for your trip to Rome
The best time to rent a motorhome in Rome is a tricky one. Rome is one the cities in the world that suffers massively from over tourism. Our honest opinion is to avoid the primary summer months and visit in March, April, September, or October. It will still be busy during these months, but it won’t be manic busy. The weather will still be quite warm as well.
- Sightseeing
There's so much to see before you head out of the city. Still, a few highlights are Vatican City, an independent city-state inside Rome, St. Peter’s Basilica, the largest church in the world, and, of course, the Colosseum, where gladiator battles used to take place.
- Cycling and Outdoor Activities
Inside the city, there's Villa Borghese and the Appian Way, which are great for renting bikes. Then, outside of Rome, you could head to the Alban Hills, as there are loads of amazing views and small cultural towns to explore.
- Italian food
Who doesn’t like Italian food? Can you imagine visiting a place where Italian food is at its peak? Well, that's Rome. Make sure you try pasta carbonara, and cacio e pepe. Make sure when you get a pizza, it's a real, authentic, thin-crust one that cooks in only a few minutes.
Best Campervan routes from Rome
Rome To Lake Bracciano
Lake Bracciano could be a good option if you only have a motorhome for hire in Rome for a day or two or don’t want to drive far. It is a volcanic lake surrounded by hills that offers a nice escape from the busy city of Rome. While you are here, head to the town of Bracciano and visit Orsini-Odescalchi Castle, where you can learn about the local history and enjoy panoramic views of the lake. It's a great place if you love the outdoors.
Rome to the Amalfi Coast
If you fancy a real adventure and have your campervan for a week, then the Amalfi Coast could be your campervan route. It's a 275km journey to the region, which starts along the A1 motorway towards Naples and goes through historic towns and fantastic countryside.
Make sure you call at Naples on the way, as it's the home of Neapolitan pizza. After Naples, you could call at Pompeii, which is only a short drive away and was the famous town destroyed by Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Then head onto Sorrento and stop there for a day. Afterwards, you can head along the SS163 coastal road, the Almafi Road, one of Italy's best driving roads. Once in this area, you will be spoilt for where to stop in your campervan.
Rome to the Abruzzo National Park
This is a good route for nature lovers and is about 150km away from Rome. Take the A24 motorway towards L'Aquila and then head into Abruzzo National Park. The park itself is amazing and home to a wide variety of animals. You can hire bikes here or go hiking. There are plenty of campsites in the area to stay in.
Sites of interest and excursions in and around Rome
Tivoli
Tivoli is a great little town on the outskirts of Rome (about 25km away). Here, you can visit Villa d'Este, renowned for its magnificent Renaissance gardens and elaborate fountains. Villa Adriana is another key attraction in this town, which provides a look into the opulence of ancient Roman architecture.
Ostia Antica
Ostia Antica is a Roman harbour city that gives you a glimpse into what life was like in ancient Rome. The whole area is an extensive archaeological site where you can wander through the ruins of homes, baths, temples, and public buildings. It is also quieter than Rome and some of the surrounding towns, which can mean it's easier to drive around the area.
Frascati
This is another town on the outskirts of the city (about 20km away), which could make a good first stop with campervan hire in Rome. It's famous for its wine production, especially white wine. One of Frascati's main attractions is the historic Villa Aldobrandini, which has lovely gardens in which to walk.
