The East Coast Road Trip
Start from New York City and allow four days for this trip, which covers 640 kilometres. Stop at Beacon, a quaint village on the Hudson River with amazing views. After an overnight stop in Beacon, head to Saratoga Springs in Upstate New York, taking Route 9W, which follows the Hudson River. Day three is Woodstock, the iconic festival venue and also home to some of the most popular hiking routes in New York, before heading back to the city.

New York to Rhode Island
273 kilometres apart, take the coast road east to Rhode Island which is a popular route with those that rent a motorhome in New York, which will take between three and four hours via the I-95 N. Called the Ocean State and the smallest state in the US, Rhode Island has stunning coastal scenery and 400 miles of coastline. Narragansett Beach, East Bech and Scarborough North State Beach are the most popular beaches, and the climate is mild in the summer. The capital of Rhode Island is Providence which has a surprisingly rich and interesting history with a strong colonial past and the famous Brown University, a private Ivy League educational institution.

New York to Chicago
Head west on the I-180 W from New York to Chicago; it's a journey of 1,269 kilometres and goes through Pennsylvania with opportunities to make stop-offs and detours to Pittsburgh and Ohio. Chicago is a culturally diverse and exciting city on Lake Michigan with great locations outside the city to use as a base and easy access to everything Chicago has to offer.

Sites of interests and excursions in New York

Niagara Falls
New York is surrounded by some simply stunning national parks, the most famous of which is Niagara Falls, which sits on the Canadian/American border. You can take a flight over the falls or a boat trip to the plunge pool directly below them. There is also an incredible drive through the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area. It is noted for its stunning colourscape in spring and autumn, the perfect location to stay and hike or bike.

Long Island
Long Island is to the southeast of New York and a world in its own right, consisting of four different counties. Attractions include internationally acclaimed sandy beaches, especially The Hamptons, wineries at Long Fork, and plenty of outdoor activities, recreation and culture. It's a good base for a motorhome or campervan with easy access to New York City via Manhattan.

Breakneck Ridge
Just an hour and a half drive from Manhattan, take a popular hike along Breakneck Ridge with spectacular views of the Hudson Highlands. Different options depend on whether you are an experienced hiker or want to take a less arduous hike on Bull Hill.
