Road Bear C 29-31, Orlando, written on about 2 months ago

Although we had booked the equipment many months in advance, we found out on site that there were no pillows, blankets, bed linen, towels, cleaning cloths etc. available. We had to buy everything ourselves on site and were of course unable to take the items we had paid for home with us after use. There were no brooms, buckets, hand brushes etc. either. After a week the fridge broke down and expensive food had to be thrown away and we had several expensive phone calls to the service hotline. We had booked Road Bear before and were always satisfied, but in Orlando it was the worst experience we have had so far and very disappointing for us. As we only got the motorhome at 3.45pm and had to do so much shopping and nobody wanted to sleep in the unwashed new clothes, we didn't sleep the first night in the expensive motorhome as planned, but in an even more expensive hotel (the cheaper one had no parking space for our large motorhome) and the next day we were able to spend some time in the launderette to wash the 4 sheets, towels, blankets etc.. Road Bear should have let us know before we arrived so we could have packed something each. All very disappointing. There were also defects. How can you leave a sharp screw on a faulty door just stuck in a doorway like that? We taped it up when my daughter scratched her arm on the first evening. Road Bear should have fixed that before handing it over. We would definitely never rent a motorhome from this branch again.

Very friendly staff, quick and easy handover. Unfortunately, some of the booked equipment was missing (crockery, camping chair, bed linen). We only received the items when we checked and spoke to them in the caravan. Unfortunately the floor was very dirty, we had to wipe it with a damp cloth several times. In the rear part of the vehicle (slide out) the interior panelling is badly damaged and the crack got bigger day by day

Top tips for your Campervan trip to Orlando

Florida can get hot. Very hot. Therefore, we recommend campervan hire in Orlando between October and April when the weather is cooler and drier. The summer can be very humid, and there are often afternoon thunderstorms, which can sometimes mean you have to change your plans.

Best Campervan routes from Orlando

Travel routes

Orlando to the Florida Panhandle (Pensacola)
If you rent a motorhome in Orlando and want a long road trip that takes you to Florida’s northernmost beaches, head to Pensacola in the Florida Panhandle. It’s a long 650km route that can be done in one day, but it's best to break it up over a few days to get the most out of it. Along the way, stop at Tallahassee, the capital of Florida, where there are plenty of nature reserves and historic sites to check out.

Orlando to the Everglades
We couldn’t write about campervan routes without mentioning the Everglades. This is a must-visit for any nature lover after they pick up a motorhome for hire in Orlando. The drive is 400km straight down to one of the most unique ecosystems in the world. It is home to wildlife such as alligators, manatees and exotic birds. Along the way, stop at Lake Okeechobee, the largest freshwater lake in Florida, and Big Cypress National Preserve just outside the Everglades. Around the Everglades are plenty of campsites; just be sure to book ahead, as they are very popular.

Orlando to Key West
The last road trip we recommend is a 650km drive to Key West, the southernmost point in the United States. This route starts by heading to Miami, a city you can’t just drive past. Stay the night and take it all in. Then, carry on the US-1 highway, which stretches over 42 bridges connecting the Florida Keys. Once in Key West, you will know you have arrived by the colourful streets and laidback atmosphere.

Sites of interest and excursions in Orlando

Kennedy Space Centre
As the launch site for NASA’s space missions, Kennedy Space Centre is on the bucket list for anyone who loves science and technology. It's somewhere that all the family will love (even if they are not into space) as there are interactive exhibits and the space shuttle Atlantis experience, where you can get up close and personal with a real space shuttle.

Gatorland
Just 20 minutes south of Orlando is Gatorland, a place perfect for families and animal lovers. The park's highlight is the interactive feeding shows where staff get close to the massive alligators.  They also have a zip line that takes you over a lake filled with alligators, which makes for a unique experience.

Wekiwa Springs State Park
Wekiwa Springs State Park is where you can find one of Florida's best freshwater springs, perfect for swimming, kayaking and paddleboarding. The temperature of the spring is a consistent 22 degrees, making it a great place to cool off when the weather gets hot. Around the park, theres is also the opportunity to hire a bike and ride through some of the forest and wetlands.
