Top tips for your trip to Miami
Miami has a tropical climate, so it’s warm weather all year round. This makes it a great choice, but it can also mean that certain times of the year can be humid. The winter months of December to April are more comfortable for exploring in a motorhome for hire in Miami. A hurricane or thunderstorm is less likely, and the temperature will be more manageable inside a campervan.
- Driving in Miami
The real campervan hire in Miami experience begins once you head out of the city. Popular coastal roads like the Overseas Highway offer fantastic views and are well-suited for road trips. Remember that there are toll roads around Miami, so it’s a good idea to get a SunPass to make toll payments easier.
- Family friendly activities
Hire a campervan in Miami, and the kids will love you. There are so many family-friendly activities in Florida due to all the amazing theme parks. Most people head for Walt Disney World (about 300km away), which both adults and kids will love. Then there's Universal Studios, SeaWorld, and many more.
- Outdoor activities
One of the best places to head to is the Oleta River State Park, just north of the city. Here, you could do some kayaking or cycle along the miles of scenic trails. It’s also the perfect place to hire a boat and participate in some fishing while not travelling too far away from the city.
Campervan offers for families in Miami
If you want to go on a family camping holiday in Miami, we recommend a large motorhome. Alcove models are very popular with families with children, as the motorhomes are spacious and have several sleeping and seating areas.
Best campervan routes in Miami
Miami to Key West
Miami to Key West is a popular route over the Overseas Highway. It's a distance of roughly 240km, so it's not that far away. You will get some great views of the turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. We recommend stopping at the Bahia Honda State Park to break the journey up, where you could dip in the crystal clear waters. Or you could call at the town of Marathon to explore the fabulous Florida Keys. Once you arrive in Key West, you can enjoy the nightlife and landmarks and enjoy exploring the area in a motorhome rental in Miami.
Miami to Orlando
This is the perfect family-friendly road trip, as Orlando is the home of the theme parks we have already discussed. It's a 300km drive that the kids will love. How many theme parks you decide to visit along the way is up to you. There are plenty of campsites in the local area.
Miami to St. Augustine
If you are a history lover, this could be the campervan road trip in Miami. It's a 400km drive to St. Augustine, which is said to be the oldest city in America. A lot of this route is along I-95, but that means you can call at West Palm Beach and Daytona Beach along the way. St. Augustine is one of those places that you will remember forever, as it's like going back in time with its cobbled streets and Spanish architecture.
Sites of interest and excursions in Miami
The Everglades National Park
The Everglades is one of the must-see places while you are on a campervan trip in Miami. Luckily, it's only about 50km outside of Miami, so you have no excuse not to visit. It's a massive area, so there are plenty of parts to choose from. One of the best things to do is take an airboat ride, a once-in-a-lifetime experience. You might also get the chance to meet some alligators close up.
Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park
This is located right at the bottom of Key Biscayne, only about 20 minutes from Miami. It’s a place to escape the busy city and enjoy the beaches and bike paths. You can also check out the Cape Florida Lighthouse. There is plenty of parking here, as it's an area popular with campervans and could make the perfect first stop on your Miami campervan adventure.
Big Cypress National Preserve
Big Cypress National Preserve is about 60 kilometres west of Miami and is a great place for fishing, kayaking, and birdwatching. The route to get here is also a nice scenic drive. Around the area, plenty of suitable camping sites are perfectly set up for campervans to enjoy the great outdoors.

When you rent a campervan in Miami, you need to be aware of several toll roads, including the Florida Turnpike and Dolphin Expressway. Your campervan will likely include a SunPass for convenient electronic toll payments, which most campervan rental companies can provide.
You only need a regular driver's license if your campervan weighs under 26,000 pounds (around 11.8 tonnes). However, a commercial driver’s license (CDL) may be required for larger vehicles. Always check with your rental provider to confirm.
Parking in Miami’s city centre and around Miami Beach can be difficult for larger vehicles. It’s best to park your campervan in designated areas outside downtown or state parks and use public transport or rideshares to explore the city.
