Valuable Tips for Your Trip to Marseille

The best time for motorhome hire in Marseille is in the summer. However, we advise avoiding the peak season of July and August as it can be too busy and the weather can get very hot. If you want quieter roads but still enjoy the warm weather, then try May, June or September.

Driving and Parking
Driving around Marseille can be tricky. It is an old city and, therefore, has many narrow roads. There are park-and-ride facilities on the outskirts of the city. We recommend these if you are visiting the city during your stay. Parking can also be limited at some attractions (even more so for a motorhome), so always check where you are heading first to avoid disappointment.
The Calanques
There are famous limestone cliffs and coves all over the Mediterranean coast. Motorhome rental in Marseille is the perfect way to explore these at your own pace. Along these are great walking paths, ideal for stopping off, enjoying the outdoors, and taking pictures.
Cultural Etiquette
Marseille is a multicultural city, but understanding the local etiquette and customs can go a long way. Locals will appreciate you learning a few phrases. Service can be slower than in other places you may have visited, but that's just the French way and something you must get used to. Tipping is not something you must do, but it is always appreciated.

Hire a campervan in Marseille: What does it actually cost?

Motorhome prices in Marseille vary depending on the season, region, and demand. Fortunately, with our price comparison tool, you can always keep an eye on rental costs. August is very popular among camping enthusiasts, so renting a campervan can cost around 210.06 £. You can travel more affordably in June, with average prices of 96.14 £.

Best campervan routes around Marseille

Marseille to Nice

This is a lovely 200km route that goes along the scenic Mediterranean coast towards Nice. The views are excellent as it's driving along the coast, and there are many opportunities to take a break or photograph. Stop at Toulon, a city known for its maritime history with a lovely port area and some nice beaches. After that, stop at Saint-Tropez, a glamorous area with great nightlife.  You could stay here for a night or on straight through to Nice along the coast road where you can spend time exploring the city. Nice isn’t the most accessible place to drive in, so consider stopping on the outskirts and catching public transport into the centre. This will be a popular route for those who pick up their campervan in Marseille.

Marseille to Arles

This is a 90km journey, perfect if you hire a campervan in Marseille for a weekend that heads west on the A5 to Arles. Before you know it, you will drive through fantastic scenery and pretty villages. On the way, a potential first stop is Aix-en-Provence, a city known for its arts. It's an excellent place to pick up supplies and stretch your legs. After stopping, carry on your journey to Arles. This is another 60km drive away along the A55 through more stunning countryside. Once you arrive in Arles, check out Alyscamps, an ancient Roman necropolis. There are several places here that inspired Vincent van Gogh.

Marseille to the Verdon Gorge

The Verdon Gorge is a stunning place to head to when you rent a motorhome in Marseille, and the journey is only 100 km away from Lyon.  This route takes you through beautiful countryside and charming towns and ends with one of France's most spectacular natural sites. To break up the journey, you could consider stopping at Manosque, a great old city at its centre, which isn’t far from Luberon Regional Park. After that, head straight for the Verdon Gorge, famous for its turquoise colour and perfect for anyone who loves the outdoors. Here, you can walk the Sentier Blanc-Martel, a trail along the gorge's edge that offers stunning panoramic views.

Best excursions and sites of interest around Marseille

Calanque de Sormiou

If you are interested in the Calanques, Calanque de Sormiou is a great one to visit, as it's just 12 km south of Marseille. Its turquoise waters, sandy beach, and limestone cliffs make it the perfect place to stop with a campervan. You could swim or snorkel or spend the day snapping pictures for Instagram. Parking around here is limited, so arrive early if you visit.

Sainte-Victoire Mountain

Just 30 km outside of Marseille is Montagne Sainte-Victoire, a natural landmark that inspired people such as the post-impressionist painter Paul Cézanne. It's an excellent place to park and hike up to the top, as trails suit all abilities. Getting to the top takes about 4 to 5 hours, but you will get great views of the Alps from a distance. The base of the mountain is also suitable for a picnic, and plenty of small villages and vineyards are dotted around. Hikes, picnics, vineyards, and campervans- what else do you want?

Château d'If

Château d’lf is a fortress perched on a small rocky island off the coast of Marseille that rose to fame in The Count of Monte Cristo. It was built back in 1524 to protect Marseille from naval attacks. Nowadays, it's a popular tourist attraction that can only be reached by ferry. You can visit the old prison cells and get fantastic views of the area. We recommend you see here at the end of your campervan trip when you have dropped the campervan off.
