Top tips for your trip to Oslo
When you think of Oslo, you probably think of snow, and you would be correct. However, summer gets much warmer than most people think, and the days are also very long. This makes it perfect for motorhome rental in Oslo from Spring to autumn. Our personal favourite would be Autumn. This is when many tourists have gone home, but before the snow starts in the winter.
- Driving in Oslo
Driving a campervan in Oslo can be tricky due to the narrow streets and limited parking for larger vehicles. The good news is that Oslo has one of Europe's best public transport systems, with trams, buses, and ferries that can take you around the city. This could be perfect if you want to check out some inaccessible parts you can’t get to in a campervan.
- Nature and Outdoor activities
Oslo is lucky enough to be surrounded by stunning natural beauty, which offers endless opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. The good news is that a lot of it isn’t that far from Oslo itself. You could drive for hours or just 30 minutes and find yourself in peaceful, unspoilt landscapes.
- Family friendly activities
Campervan hire in Oslo is perfect if you are travelling with kids. Only 20 minutes outside the city, you could drive to TusenFryd, the largest amusement park. Or visit the Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology, which is popular with children of all ages.
Campervan offers for couples in Oslo
For a romantic trip for two exploring Oslo and other cities nearby, a smaller motorhome is just right. Discover our selection of vehicles for two people and explore together.
Campervan offers for families in Oslo
If you want to go on a family camping holiday in Oslo, we recommend a large motorhome. Alcove models are very popular with families with children, as the motorhomes are spacious and have several sleeping and seating areas.
Best campervan routes in Oslo
Oslo to Hardangervidda National Park
Around 300 kilometres from Oslod, Hardangervidda is the largest national park in Norway, where many people once they have picked up their campervan in Oslo head for. It's a beautiful drive that takes you through mountain landscapes and is often said to be one of the most scenic drives in the country. Once you arrive at the national park, there is much to do. You could hike, bike, or just relax by one of the many lakes in the park. It is also home to Norway’s largest glacier, which is why people head here.
Oslo to Jotunheimen National Park
Jotunheimen National Park is a 4-hour drive from Oslo and could make the perfect destination if you rent a motorhome in Oslo for a short weekend adventure. It's far enough away that it feels like an adventure but not too long of a drive. It's a great place (like most of Oslo) for lovers of the outdoors, as there are plenty of opportunities here for hiking, climbing and fishing. The Sognefjell Road, which goes through the park, is often said to be one of the most scenic routes for campervanners to drive along.
Oslo to Geirangerfjord
This journey to Geirangerfjord is 380 kilometres from Oslo, and it's a drive that will take you through some of Norway's most iconic landscapes. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage site, and that's due to the fantastic deep blue colours of the fjord, majestic towering cliffs and the famous Seven Sisters waterfall. The drive to get here passes through mountains and valleys, with some great places to stop to take it all in. Once here, there are some campsites you can stay in which are close to the fjord.
Sites of interest and excursions in Oslo
Holmenkollen Ski Jump
This is one of the most visited landmarks in Oslo, which is why it made it onto our list. The Holmenkollen Ski Jump gives you great views over the city and Oslofjord. There is a museum where you can learn all about the history of skiing in Norway, one of the most popular sports in the country. If you are feeling energetic, there's even a ski simulator that you can try.
Oslofjord
This is just a short drive from the city centre and could make an excellent stop off when you first leave the city. It's a fjord full of small islands and picturesque villages. There are plenty of opportunities here for swimming, hiring a boat, or enjoying some fishing. The coastal road along the fjord is a great place to drive, especially with a motorhome for hire in Oslo, and there are plenty of places to get some photographs for Instagram.
Oslomarka
Oslomarka is a large forest just on the outskirts of Oslo. It's a great destination for those who want to enjoy the outdoors without travelling far from the city. Like many places in Oslo, it's great for those who want to enjoy the fresh air and nature. There are plenty of campsites nearby that are suitable for families without having to spend hours driving.

Oslo has quite a few toll roads compared to other cities. Most of these are automatic and collected electronically. Your van will need an AutoPASS tag, but your provider can help with that.
Parking can be difficult, especially for larger campervans. The roads are also quite narrow in places. However, with your campervan, you will likely spend most of your time outside the city.
In most cases, if your campervan weighs under 3.5 tonnes, a standard driver's license is sufficient. However, you may need a specific license category for larger motorhomes or campervans exceeding this weight. Always confirm with your rental company and check local regulations.
