Germany is a must-visit for your next campervan holiday as there is so much to see and do and it is a camper friendly country. Many Germans enjoy travelling in a campervan, and the country is also very well adapted for campervan holidays. The country definitely has something for everyone. If you enjoy holidays by the sea then you could rent a campervan and go on a campervan holiday along the west coast or on the Baltic coast. If you’re looking for a relaxing walk by the sea, Germany has plenty of fantastic beaches to choose from. However, if you prefer hiking, the Black Forest would be the ideal destination. There are numerous walking tracks and stunning views of the surrounding area. Germany is home to beautiful lakes like Lake Constance, which is a popular place for campervan holidays and perfect for nature lovers.

Best Routes for Campervan Rental in Germany

Here at CamperDays we have both the know-how about campervans, but also provide you with some tips on some of the best campervan routes in Germany below.

  • Volcano Route

Germany isn’t known for its volcanoes, but a drive along Germany’s volcano route may just change your mind. This route connects the Rhine River to the Eifel low mountain range. Discover volcanic craters, shimmering lakes, geysers and lots of picturesque towns and villages along this 174 mile      route from the comfort of your campervan.

  • German Alpine Road

This route is in southern Germany and spans 280 miles. It is the country's oldest tourist route, starting at Lake Constance in Lindau and ending at the breathtaking Lake Königssee near Berchtesgaden. The German Alpine Road is the ideal route for anyone who loves breathtaking scenery.

  • German Avenue Road

This route shows how diverse Germany is. It starts in Rügen and takes you all the way down to Lake Constance. This route stretches over 700 miles and takes you through the Harz Mountains and through central Germany where you can discover the spectacular landscapes of Saxony-Anhalt, Lower Saxony, Thuringia and Saxony.

Driving in Germany

Traffic rules with a motorhome
  • Remember that in Germany drivers drive on the right and it is important to keep this in mind when overtaking or turning. Traffic coming from the right has priority at all crossroads and junctions. Vehicles on a roundabout have right of way, unless road signs indicate they don’t. When you enter a roundabout do not indicate, you should only indicate when you are leaving a roundabout.

  • Unless road signs state otherwise, the following speed limits apply when driving in Germany: motorways 130 km/h (80mph), main roads 100 km/h (62mph) and urban areas 50 km/h (31mph). Many parts of the Autobahn have no speed limit and this is indicated by a circular white sign with five diagonal black lines. Only drive as fast as you feel is safe and take extra care when overtaking as vehicles can suddenly appear.

Things To Do and See

  • Lake Constance: is well known for its natural beauty and mild climate. It is worth visiting for both winter sports and water sports. The area offers the perfect combination of a beautiful lake, picturesque towns and the breathtaking Alps.

  • Mosel Valley: one of the most beautiful river landscapes in Germany. This area is popular with hikers and is home to lots of quaint villages that line the shores of the river. Some of the most popular villages are Hatzenport and Cochem.

  • Zugspitze: the highest mountain in Germany at 2962 m high (9717 ft). It is located near the Alps and is home to three glaciers and views of 400 mountain peaks in 4 countries. The views from the summit are breathtakingly beautiful.

  • Schwerin Castle: this fairytale style castle surrounded by the waters of Lake Schwerin is truly spectacular. In 1857 Frederick Francis II converted the building into an impressive symbol of his dynasty. The castle has countless towers, beautiful gardens and majestic wings and is definitely worth a visit.
