Cruise America C-21, Montreal, written on 7 days ago

Super friendly welcome in St-Eustache Montreal, clean vehicle, some small defects on the vehicle, there was certainly a problem, either the cups of suspension, or the silent block trapeze or engine, no solar panels to have electricity continuously, the water heater which wants to work when it wants and if you're 3 or 4 in the camper you have to forget about privacy, in terms of mattress comfort I've had more comfortable mattresses but in short that's part of the adventure, next time we'll take a bigger one with a separate bedroom, what held us back was the price of the bigger ones unfortunately.

Collection / instruction and return went without a hitch. However, we had various problems with the camper: The roof over the bed was leaking, it rained into the bed, one tyre caused problems from day one so that it eventually had to be replaced. Cruise America/Canada sometimes didn't respond to emails for 4 days and we had to drive with a defective tyre. The cleanliness was also so-so. I may be used to different things, but the leftover food from the previous traveller in the sink on collection does not speak of cleanliness for me. We did get 125 dollars back, but unfortunately that only compensated minimally for the hassle with the camper.

Top tips for your Campervan trip to Montreal

Montreal sure knows how to do extreme weather. Summer can be hot and humid, while winter can be full of snow. The sweet spot to visit is late spring or early autumn. This way, you get fewer tourists and nice weather - perfection.

    Driving
Driving around Montreal can feel like hard work - expect heavy traffic, one-way streets and locals who love to use their horns. Once you escape the city, things instantly get better. The roads are well-maintained, scenic and perfect if you’re travelling with a motorhome for hire in Montreal.

    Family friendly-activities
The Montreal Biodome is a favourite for kids (and grown-ups who love penguins). It's an indoor ecosystem where you can walk from the tropics to Antarctica. If you hire a campervan in Montreal, consider visiting La Ronde, a theme park in the city (perfect for teenagers). For something more laid back, check out the Botanical Gardens.

    The Outdoors
Canada and campervans are a match made in heaven, and Montreal’s surrounding areas won’t disappoint. Parc National d’Oka is less than an hour's drive and has beaches, hiking, and canoeing. Mont-Tremblant is also worth visiting, with all the outdoor activities you need.

Best Campervan routes from Montreal

Travel routes

Montreal to Quebec City
This is a classic road trip (255km). Most people who rent a motorhome in Montreal follow the St. Lawrence River while stopping at charming little towns. Trois-Rivières is one of the best ones. It's a good place to stretch your legs and explore the quaint old town. When you arrive in Quebec, prepare for a city full of cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and cosy cafes serving amazing pastries. Many people who visit Quebec say it has a European feel.

Montreal to Mont-Tremblant National Park
A shorter drive, sure - but it's full of postcard scenery from start to finish. Monte-Tremblant National Park looks similar to an Alpine village with its bright buildings, old streets and hiking trails that were made for exploring. Once you’ve parked your campervan at one of the local campsites, swim in the lake, rent a kayak or just soak up the views.

Montreal to Toronto
This is the longest road trip on our list and deserves its own Spotify playlist. Head west from Montreal using Highway 301, which has plenty of Canadian scenery and lakes. If you've sorted your campervan hire in Montreal, stop halfway at Kingston, which sits right on the edge of Lake Ontario. It's a nice place to explore - take the ferry and explore the little islands. Once you arrive in Toronto, we recommend parking outside the city

Sites of interest and excursions in Montreal

Parc national des Îles-de-Boucherville
Just 20 minutes from downtown Montreal, this campervan-friendly oasis feels miles away from the city but without the long drive. It's a small group of islands connected by paths and bridges. Rent a kayak or a bike, or just park, unpack some snacks, and relax in the great outdoors.

Mont-Saint-Bruno National Park
Just under an hour from Montreal, Mont-Saint-Bruno is the place to head to when you rent a campervan in Montreal and want to see nature that is not that far from the city. It has easy trails that wind past lakes, through leafy forests, and picnic areas to chill out with your campervan doors open and a few chairs outside. Theres also a visitor centre where you can grab a coffee.

Chambly Canal National Historic Site
Less than 30km from Montreal, Chambly Canal is a chilled-out place to walk, bike, or just watch the boats go past. Chambly has all the cafes and ice cream shops you will ever need and is a good place to stock up on local food before you head further afield in your campervan.

FAQs for Campervan hire in Montreal

Most rental companies allow it but always double-check first. The border crossing is easy if you have your passport and paperwork sorted.

Most people in Montreal speak both French and English. If you visit smaller towns, locals appreciate the effort if you try some basic French.

Wild camping is usually a no-go in Quebec, but the campsites here are so good that when you book a camper van for hire in Montreal, you probably won’t mind too much.

Moose do sometimes stray onto the roads. This is usually at dusk or dawn. Look out for the moose crossing signs, and keep an extra eye.

You should have no issues, but we recommend downloading offline maps just in case.

Grab some Montreal bagels, smoked meat sandwiches, and some ingredients to make your own poutine. It's not a proper road trip adventure without these.
