Summer and early autumn are the best seasons to rent a motorhome in Ontario, giving you warm weather and stunning landscapes. If you’re heading north, expect fewer towns, longer distances, and jaw-dropping scenery.

    Driving
Driving a motorhome rental in Ontario is for the most part, very scenic with the highways being very well maintained. If you are heading north, fill up on petrol whenever you get a chance as petrol stations are few and far between.

    Family friendly-activities
Top of the list is Niagara Falls, because, well, its Niagara Falls and everyone should visit here. Right near it is the Butterfly Conservatory which always goes down well. Black Creek Pioneer Village in Toronto is where kids can step back in time and see what life was like in the 1800s.

    The outdoors
You're in the right place if you are into kayaking, hiking, or photographing fantastic scenery. Algonquin Provincial Park should be near the top of your list, perfect for a hike through a forest. Tobermory and Bruce Peninsula are other highlights, as are its crystal clear waters, caves, and some of the best hiking trails in Canada.

Best Campervan routes from Ontario

Toronto to Manitoulin Island
All of these routes will be quite long as Ontario is such a large area. This drive will take you from Toronto's urban skyline to island paradise. Head north towards Collingwood, which should be your first stop with its coffee shops, craft breweries and waterfront views. After that, stop at Tobermory, which feels like you might be in the Caribbean (except a lot colder) as it has incredible turquoise waters. You must then book the Chi-Cheemaun ferry to reach Manitoulin Island (the world's largest freshwater island). Once there you can drive through lovely villages and untouched landscapes. This is a popular route for those who pick up their camper van for hire in Ontario.

Ottawa to Thousand Islands
Rent a campervan in Ontario
and head towards the Thousand Islands, an area full of tiny, storybook-like islands, castles and some of the best water views in Canada. Along the way, stop at Gananoque, the gateway to the islands, where you can take a boat cruise through the islands. After that, head toward Prince Edward County, which is known as Ontario’s wine country. It's a paradise for foodies with its local butter tarts and restaurants.

Thunder Bay to Lake Superior Provincial Park
Starting in Thunder Bay, head to Kakabeka Falls, which is called the Niagara of the North, where you can get up close with a trail that takes you to the edge of the falls. After that, follow the Trans-Canada Highway, which is a lovely drive along the coastline of Lake Superior. We recommend stopping at Terrace Bay, a small town with a lighthouse that gives you great views over a lake called Gitche Gumee. After that, you will finally arrive in Lake Superior Provincial Park, a hikers' paradise. Park up and sleep under a sky full of stars.

Sites of interest and excursions in Ontario

Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake
Niagara Falls needs no introduction, as it's the most famous waterfall in the world and is a place where many people head to after picking up their campervan hire in Ontario. Take a boat ride on the Maid of the Mist and walk along the Niagara Parkway. Don’t just stop at the waterfall though, as Niagara-on-the-Lake is a special town that often gets overlooked.

Sleeping Giant Provincial Park
If you're near Thunder Bay (one of our road trips starts there), you should check out Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. It's named after the enormous rock formation that looks like a giant lying on its back from a distance. Once you see it, you won't be able to unsee it. Walk up to the top of the giant, about 700 feet above Lake Superior, and appreciate being out in the wild. You won't believe how beautiful Ontario is.

Bonnechere Caves
This ancient cave was formed millions of years ago and today, you can walk through the tunnels, and check out the fossils embedded in the walls. There are guided tours so you get to hear all about the history. If you visit in the summer, they are a great place to escape the heat as they stay cool all year round.

FAQ for Campervan Hire in Ontario

Yes, plenty of ferries can take you across lakes and rivers. The Chi-Cheemaun from Tobermory to Manitoulin Island is a favourite, but book ahead.

Pack bug spray, wear long sleeves at night, and invest in a good citronella candle. Don’t leave your campervan door open for too long at night either.
