Best Campervan routes around Zurich
Zurich to Liechtenstein
Hiring a campervan in Zurich allows you to travel to the tiny, mountainous principality of Liechtenstein, sandwiched between Switzerland and Austria and a 110km drive east of Zurich. You’ll come across several places worth seeing on the way, including Lucerne, Konstanz, and St. Gallen.
What Liechtenstein lacks in size, the microstate makes up for in grandeur. It’s full of experiences waiting to be discovered, including medieval castles and villages linked by a network of trails through alpine landscapes. The capital, Vaduz, is the country's cultural centre and home to art galleries.
Zurich to Interlaken
Driving the 100km from Zurich to Interlaken – the adventure capital of Europe – is cheaper than going by train, and popular stops along the way include Mount Pilatus and Mount Titlis. And there’ll be lots more to do when you arrive in Interlaken, such as skydiving, paragliding, and canyon exploration. There are St Beatus Caves and Thun Castle, as well as the scenic countryside of Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald for the less adventurous.
Zurich to Lucerne
The 50km journey from Zurich to Lucerne allows you to stop off some historic towns and take in breathtaking views en route as you drive through the stunning Swiss landscape. It’s the perfect small drive if you can only hire a campervan in Zurich for a day or two and don’t want to drive that much. Lucerne, located between majestic mountains and Lake Lucerne, is one of the most beautiful towns in the heart of Switzerland.
Best excursions and sites of interest around Zurich
Swiss Alps
No Zurich-based holiday is complete without visiting the Swiss Alps, which is less than an hour away. Many organised, guided tours are available, but campervan hire in Zurich allows you to stop whenever you want to take in the splendid views at your own pace. Popular routes include the Grimsel Pass, Furka Pass, and Gotthard Pass. Remember that you must be confident in your ability to drive through mountainous terrain safely.
Rhine Falls
Rhine Falls, near Schaffhausen, is on the outskirts of Zurich. From viewing platforms high above the falls, you can hear the roar and feel the force of the biggest and most powerful waterfall in Europe – several hundred cubic metres of water spanning 150 metres, plunging into the depths at more than 20 metres a second. There’s also an adventure trail with a lift system that makes access to the Falls easier.
Black Forest
Many nature lovers head out of Zurich and Switzerland for a scenic day trip to the Black Forest Mountain range in Germany. Arranging for a camper van for hire in Zurich avoids the hassle of figuring out public transport schedules. The region is also renowned for its spas, and the largest town, Freiburg, is packed with Gothic buildings surrounded by vineyards.

Roads in Switzerland are typically in excellent condition and the country has one of the lowest traffic accident rates in the world. But be aware of steep, winding routes, hairpin bends, long tunnels, and many mountain passes close for winter. The limit is generally 50km/h (31mph) in built-up areas, 80 to 100km/h on the open road, and 120km/h on motorways. And don’t forget the Swiss drive on the right!
You need to pay a toll to drive on Switzerland’s motorways and national class 1 and 2 roads in a vehicle weighing up to 3.5 tonnes. (Vehicles above this weight are subject to a heavy-vehicle charge). You pay 40 Swiss francs (CHF) – about £35 – for a windshield toll sticker (vignette) valid from December 1 to January 31. Your rental provider will be able to provide you with more details regarding this.
It's allowed in certain places, but this must be “above the treeline”. This means space is limited, and they are usually remote. We recommend staying in a designated campsite.
