Affordable Campervan hire in Johannesburg

Johannesburg, or Joburg if you want to sound like a local, is South Africa’s biggest city. It is full of history and energy and ideally suited for road trip adventures across the country. Let’s be honest, though, you didn’t rent a campervan to stay in one place. The real adventure starts when you leave the city - you can wake up to mountain views one day, look for elephants in the wild the next, and end your campervan trip watching the sunset over the savannah. If you rent a campervan in Johannesburg, you can explore at your own pace, on your terms, and without worrying about hotel bookings.

Finding cheap campervan hire in Johannesburg is easy with Camperdays. We connect you with local rental providers with the best campervans and motorhomes. If you need a small campervan for two people, we have one. If you need a larger motorhome for the whole family, we also have those. Whatever your plans, we’ll help you find the perfect wheels for your South African road trip.

Top tips for your Campervan trip to Johannesburg

When you think of Johannesburg and South Africa, you probably think of the heat, and you would be right, it's a very hot country. In the day, it's hot, but at night, the temperature can drop quite a lot, so pack a few hoodies and a waterproof coat.

    Driving
The good news is that if you hire a campervan in Johannesburg and are from the UK, South Africa drives on the left-hand side. This makes driving much easier, as half the battle is getting used to driving on the other side of the road.
  • sightseeing
    Family-friendly activities
Lion and Safari Park (just 40 minutes from the city) is a great place to get up close with Lions and Cheetahs. Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens is a lovely, peaceful place to escape the city with waterfalls and picnic places.

    The Outdoors
There are some great outdoor places just outside of the city. Cradle of Humankind is about 45 minutes from Joburg and is home to the Sterkfontein Caves (home to the oldest human fossils). Hartbeespoort Dam is nice for boating and hiking. Pilanesberg National Park is also a great place to take a safari trip for a day.

Hire a campervan in Johannesburg: What does it actually cost?

Motorhome prices in Johannesburg vary depending on the season, region, and demand. Fortunately, with our price comparison tool, you can always keep an eye on rental costs. Best Campervan routes from Johannesburg

Johannesburg to Kruger National Park
No South African road trip list would be complete without adding Kruger National Park to the list. This is one of the best safari destinations in the world, and driving there makes it even better. Pick up your camper van for hire in Johannesburg and stop at Dullstroom (not as dull as the name suggests). It is a lovely village with cosy cafes and a good place to stretch your legs. Arrive at Kruger National Park and get parked up at one of the campsites. If you arrive in the evening, be prepared for an amazing sunset while hearing the roar of lions in the background. Head out on an organised safari in the morning and keep your eyes peeled for the big five species.

Johannesburg to Golden Gate Highlands National Park
Golden Gate Highlands National Park is one of the country's most underrated national parks. The drive here is roughly 320km, easily driven in a day. The drive will take you through farmland and winding roads, sometimes making you question whether you are still in South Africa. Along the way, stop at the town of Clarens and pick up a bite to eat. Once at the Golden Gate, find a designated campsite and wait for that glowing gold at sunset and sunrise.

Johannesburg to the Drakensberg Mountains
The Drakensberg Mountains look like something out of the Lord of the Rings, which makes it the perfect destination for a road trip. It's a 350km drive to get here. The drive is along the N3, which takes you through lovely countryside. Once you drive through the Drakensberg Mountains, you’ll take pictures every 2 minutes and wonder why this place isn’t higher up on most people's South African road trips.

Sites of interest and excursions in Johannesburg

Cradle of Humankind
The Cradle of Humankind is roughly 1 hour outside of Johannesburg and is one of the most important fossil sites on the planet. You will find some of the oldest human remains ever discovered here. Take a guided tour and see where they are still digging up new finds. Even if you think this isn’t your thing, we recommend you visit it because it's a lifetime experience.

Soweto & Vilakazi Street
This is where South Africa’s past meets its present and is somewhere everyone should visit during their time in the country. Vilakazi Street was once home to Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. You can go inside Mandela's former home, which is now a museum, giving you a look into his life. Soweto itself is full of street markets, music and some fantastic food.

Melville Koppies Nature Reserve
Melville Koppies Nature Reserve is right on the edge of Johannesburg and is a welcomed break from the city noise. It's an ancient ridge of rocky hills that has been around for millions of years, and it makes you see what Joburg looked like before skyscrapers took over. There are hiking trails around the area, and it's a good place to get some photographs for Instagram.

FAQs for Campervan hire in Johannesburg

Campervan hire in Johannesburg is safe. Make sure you stick to main roads, and avoid driving in rural areas at night. Always lock your campervan when parked up.

A lot of the major highways have tolls on them, which is something to be aware of when you pick up your motorhome for hire in Johannesburg. These will accept cash and cards, but check with your rental provider to see if they offer an e-tag for tolls.

You can, but stick to the designated roads as most of these are campervan-friendly. Don’t go off the beaten track; you will likely need a 4x4 for these roads. Always keep your windows up no matter how far away the animals are.

Wild camping with your motorhome rental in Johannesburg is not recommended for safety reasons. Instead, stick to designated campsites or private game reserves that allow campsites.

There are plenty in and around Joburg, but once you head into rural areas, they will become harder to find. Make sure you fill up on petrol before leaving the city.
